DES MOINES — Majesty Tutson found her focal point. Jessica Gehrke was a drama queen.

Both are Drake Relays champions.

Tutson and Gehrke made the first day of the Drake Relays a field day for the girls from Iowa City, winning titles in the discus and long jump, respectively.

Gehrke, a junior from Iowa City West, earned her crown on the final jump, overtaking Davenport Central’s Alexis Mitchell with a leap of 18 feet, 11 inches. The clutch effort came moments after Mitchell had wrested the lead from Gehrke at 18-6 3/4.

“I saw (Mitchell’s jump), and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a good jump,’ ” Gehrke said. “But it wasn’t over yet. I still had one jump left. I pushed myself to get it, and it happened.”

Tutson’s title was less dramatic, but no less impressive. Her winning effort was 138-9.

“I think I’ve found my focal point better ,” said the senior from City High. “So I’m throwing harder. I found the point in the back of the ring. And the higher (the disc) goes, it goes further.”

Tutson seized the lead in the preliminaries at 138-6, then improved it a bit in the finals.

“It feels good that I did it,” she said. “I’ve been praying for this all season.”

North Fayette’s Britlyn Sieck was second. Her first throw (136-0) was her best of the day, and the best of her career. Courtney Fritz of West was third.

“I’m happy, but I’m not,” Sieck said. “I got a (personal record), and that’s good. I just wish I could have thrown 3 feet further.”

Gehrke also established a lifetime best. It also set a school record and was the third-best effort by a high school girl at Drake.

“I picked up speed a little bit, hit the board and got up in the air,” she said. “My dream became reality.”

Katie Flood of West Des Moines Dowling won her third straight title in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 10:05.48. West’s Nichole Engelhardt and Rachel Hegeman were fourth and fifth.
