Mid-Prairie boys’ basketball coach Don Showalter has been selected head coach for the 2009-10 USA Basketball boys’ 16-and-under boys’ developmental national team.
“As you can imagine, this is a really exciting time for me,” Showalter said. “As a coach, when you reach the highest level of coaching you can reach, which for me is being the national team coach for the high school level, is a tremendous honor. I’m very excited about it. Working with USA Basketball has been a great experience for me in the past.”
The team will compete at the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 championships, scheduled for June 17-21 at Mendoza, Argentina. The top three nations will qualify to compete in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championships (dates and site to be determined).
Showalter has a 35-year record of 521-262, including 405-170 at Mid-Prairie. He has taken the Golden Hawks to four state tournaments, highlighted by a Class 2A runner-up finish in 2007.
