Kak, Westrum honored at Drake

Omet Kak, a senior at Des Moines North, and Whitney Westrum, a senior at Waukee, were named the outstanding high school boys’ and girls’ performers at the Drake Relays.

Randall earns IBCA state honor

Brad Randall, who coached Solon to an undefeated season and a Class 2A state championship in boys’ basketball, was selected the 2A state coach of the year by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association.

Randall, 48, is 274-89 in 16 years at Solon, including 28-0 last season.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Too early for title talk?

Not necessarily.

They don’t keep track of points at the Drake Relays. If they did, the boys from Cedar Rapids Washington would have brought more home than the three relay titles they captured.

DES MOINES — They’d spent their high school careers chasing “a special moment.”

An all-time Iowa best — in their final race of their final Drake Relays. Yeah, that’s special.

Waukee ran the 1,600-meter relay like no girls team in Iowa has run it before. Whitney Westrum outdueled Sioux City East’s Ellen Dougherty in the final stretch to give the Warriors the gold in 3:50.21. East’s 3:50.58 also beat the former standard (3:51.70), set by Starmont 28 years ago.

Relay gold rush for Washington boys

DES MOINES — Thirty-four years, the Cedar Rapids Washington boys had gone without a relay title at the Drake Relays.

This year, in the immortal words of Alex Carr:

“We got three.”

Lewis, Warriors sprint to Drake titles

DES MOINES — For a day at least, Cedar Rapids is the sprint capital of Iowa.

Xavier’s Patrick Lewis captured the boys’ 100-meter title and Washington claimed the boys’ 800-meter relay crown Friday at the Drake Relays.

Tight girls’ races carry the day at Drake

DES MOINES — Photo finishes were the theme of the girls’ races at the Drake Relays Friday.

Gabriel Williams of Sioux City West edged Iowa City West’s Jessica Gehrke by 6-hundredths of a second in the 100-meter dash. Shelby Houlihan of Sioux City East trimmed North Tama’s Sara Stoakes by 5-hundredths of a second in the 800-meter run.

“I didn’t know I’d won until they handed me the (championship) flag,” Houlihan said.

And in the 100-meter hurdles, Susan Rodriguez of Pleasant Valley upset Logan-Magnolia’s Alex Gochenour. The difference: 2-thousandths of a second, 15.168 to 15.170.

Tutson, Gehrke have a field day at Drake

DES MOINES — Majesty Tutson found her focal point. Jessica Gehrke was a drama queen.

Both are Drake Relays champions.

Tutson and Gehrke made the first day of the Drake Relays a field day for the girls from Iowa City, winning titles in the discus and long jump, respectively.

DES MOINES — Quite a week. And quite a cheek.

Marion’s Drew Clark successfully defended his shot put title at the Drake Relays Thursday. He did so convincingly, with a heave of 61 feet, 1 inch.  (more…)
