DES MOINES — It was a slow day for area Class 2A girls at the state track meet.
The highlight was a third-place finish from Jesup’s Tessa Westpfahl in the 400-meter hurdles. She was timed in 1:05.34. Alex Gochenour of Logan-Magnolia won it at 1:03.71.
“I was really hoping for top five,” Westpfahl said.
Westpfahl ran in Lane 6, with the bulk of her competitors inside of her.
“I couldn’t see them. I didn’t know where they were at,” she said. “I finally saw a girl coming on the eighth hurdle, I startred to panic a little and I hit the hurdle with my knee.”
Friday’s 2A highlight came in the high jump, in which Dike-New Hartford’s Hannah Willms and West Fork’s Taylor Twedt renewed acquaintances for the first time since their Drake Relays encounter.
The sequel was just as good. Willms cleared 5-11, Twedt 5-9.
That vaulted DNH into a share of the lead. The Wolverines have 24 points. So do Gilbert and Logan-Magnolia. Northeast is fourth with 20. The final nine events will be contested Saturday.
