MARION — Morgan Paige has committed to play women’s basketball at the University of Wisconsin. Her younger brother apparently is in no hurry to make a college decision.

“He going to wait until his junior year,” the siblings’ mother, Sherryl Gaffney-Paige, said Monday morning. “He’ll see where he fits in. He’s in no rush at all.”

Gaffney-Paige said that Marcus, the starting point guard as Linn-Mar (23-3) advanced to the Class 4A state final, “is getting a lot of notice” from Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Creighton and Virginia.

A 6-footer, Paige averaged 7.3 points and 3 assists per game. His coming-out party came in the state semifinal, when he scored 12 of his career-high 22 points as the Lions rallied past Bettendorf. He scored eight points in the championship-game loss to Ames.

According to scout.com, Ames’ Harrison Barnes is the top-ranked boys’ basketball recruit in the country in the Class of 2010.

Barnes led the Little Cyclones to the Class 4A state championship in March. According to the Web site, Iowa State is still on Barnes’ list of 12 schools under consideration. The list also features Duke, North Carolina and Kansas.

Four weeks after I posted next year’s girls’ basketball preseason rankings, I’m giving equal time for the boys.

Again, the rankings are loosely based on mathematics — (2008-09 W-L pct. ) x (pct. returning ppg) — with a little fudging based on tradition. For instance, Linn-Mar, Western Christian, Pella Christian and others get a little bit of a break.

Some thoughts:

Where will Ames be ranked in the national preseason polls? The Little Cyclones have to be somewhere in the top 25, don’t they?

The deepest class is 1A, especially with Council Bluffs St. Albert, Treynor and Des Moines Christian dropping a class. A top-10 isn’t enough for the small schools. I’m going farther.

Seven of my top 10 in 2A were neither state participants nor ranked in the final Associated Press poll last season, including No. 1 Monroe PCM.
