It’s four hours until start time at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational cross country meet.
It’s hot. It’s humid. Here we go again.
Twice in recent years, including last year, a number of runners were hospitalized with heat exhaustion. Folks at Prairie took the brunt of the blame, even though they were prepared as much as reasonably expected.
It’s the first meet of the season. A good number of kids have not competed before. A good number of them aren’t in shape.
Coaches need to be responsible. If someone is struggling, get them off the course. If someone’s not ready to run in these conditions, hold them out.
Runners, if you’re feeling rotten, call it a day. No heroes are necessary today. It’s just one race.
Parents, if your son or daughter falls ill, don’t blame the host school.
Host school, if kids are shuttled away in an ambulance and we report it, don’t jump down our throats. Facts are facts, and we will report them.
