Unless something happened after I took my results and left, the Prairie Invitational cross country meet went pretty smoothly, considering 90-degree heat.
A few kids were treated … I don’t recall anyone leaving via ambulance, though I may have missed it. Prairie AD Rocky Bennett breathed a deep sigh of relief when a cool front came through during the JV races.
One varsity boy from Iowa City West was having a hard time of it. He basically was out on his feet. He staggered to the finish line, semi-conscious, before Prairie officials assisted him (had they done beforehand, the kid would have been disqualified).
West’s girls won for the 12th straight year while Cedar Rapids Washington claimed the boys’ title. West’s Nichole Engelhardt and Washington’s Lewi Manirumva were individual winners.
I wondered why there were so few runners in the 16-19 age group at the Fifth Season 8K on Monday. Now I know: they had a meet Tuesday. Duh.
