Tomorrow is my cross country/volleyball double day. It’s one of my favorite days of the year.
Leading off is an early drive to Troy Mills for the North Linn Invitational cross country meet. Seems the meet starts earlier each year. Tomorrow, the varsity girls take the line at 8:50 a.m. Fortunately, the forecast looks good.
After the races, results and interviews are complete, it’s back home to write the story, put down a quick sandwich, shower and bolt to Cedar Rapids Jefferson for the end of pool play at the Westside Invitational volleyball tournament.
Without a doubt, it’s the state’s biggest and best invitational. This year’s 24-team field features 12 ranked teams. Only eight of them will advance to the “Gold Bracket,” a quarterfinal round full of sharks. Among the favorites: Mount Vernon, Iowa City West, Dubuque Hempstead, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Dike-New Hartford and Marion.
The bracket portion of the tournament is scheduled to begin around 2:30, and this tournament generally stays pretty well on schedule. The finals are set for 5:30.
It will be a long day. But an enjoyable one.
