This one lived up to the hype.
The Westside Invitational volleyball tournament was as good as advertised. The final eight teams standing had a combined season record of 210-28.
Mount Vernon assistant coach Carol Woods called it “an Eastern Iowa (all-class) state tournament.”
Iowa City West won it, outlasting Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 20-25, 25-15, 15-12, in the final.
The Women of Troy are 28-2 this season; Coach Kathy Bresnahan is 500-162 in her career.
Kennedy knocked off previously unbeaten Mount Vernon in the semifinals, touching off a riotous celebration. The Cougars fed off it for a while in the finals, but West was better at the end.
Four of West’s six wins went three games, including two victories over rapidly improving Cedar Rapids Washington.
The tournament ended at 7:50, which was 11 hours, 20 minutes after it began.
