Wamac & MVC VB pool assignments

The 16-team Wamac Conference volleyball tournament begins with pool play tonight at Marion High School. The first matches are at 5 p.m.

Here are pool assignments:

Pool 1: Mount Vernon (28-1, 7-0 East), Vinton-Shellsburg (17-8, 4-3 West), Solon (17-13, 4-3 East), Clear Creek-Amana (6-16, 0-7 West).

Pool 2: Marion (35-5, 7-0 West), Western Dubuque (19-12, 4-3 East), Williamsburg (17-11, 3-4 West), Anamosa (3-19, 0-7 East).

Pool 3: West Delaware (28-6, 6-1 East), Benton Community (22-9, 5-2 West), DeWitt Central (9-19, 2-5 East), Independence (5-16. 1-6 West).

Pool 4: Waterloo Columbus (19-15, 6-1 West), Beckman (12-21, 4-3 East), Center Point-Urbana (8-15, 2-5 West), Maquoketa (1-17, 1-6 East).

A pretty good team from Pool 1 and another from Pool 2 will be in the consolation bracket, and a not-so-good team from Pool 4 will be advancing to the championship bracket.

The top two teams from each pool advance to championship-bracket play at Mount Vernon, starting at 4 p.m. Saturday. The bottom two teams from each pool go to Maquoketa (same day, same time).

Mississippi Valley Conference assignments also are out. Pool play starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, with bracket play scheduled for 2 p.m.

Pool A: Iowa City West (29-2, 7-0), Linn-Mar (18-15, 2-5), Cedar Rapids Xavier (18-14, 3-4), Cedar Falls (10-21, 2-5).

Pool B: Cedar Rapids Washington (20-8, 5-2), Dubuque Wahlert (17-13, 3-4), Dubuque Senior (7-19, 2-5), Iowa City High (19-13, 3-4).

Pool C: Dubuque Hempstead (26-3, 7-0), Waterloo East (22-8, 5-2), Waterloo West (3-22, 0-7).

Pool D: Cedar Rapids Prairie (24-4, 5-2), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (26-6, 5-2), Cedar Rapids Jefferson (11-19, 0-7).

I heard last night you could have gotten 50,000-to-1 odds before the season on the Tampa Bay Rays winning the World Series. I think you could have gotten similar odds on Washington winning a volleyball divisional championship. Beat Jefferson on Tuesday, though, and the Warriors earn a share.
