Wamac volleyball, a recap

It’s the eye of the hurricane (well, the day between pool play and bracket play) at the Wamac Conference volleyball tournament.

Five Wamac teams are ranked. So, naturally, the top-seeded team for bracket play is an unrated, Waterloo Columbus. It’s not a major surprise, though; the Sailors navigated through a pool that was, well, weak.

So here are brackets for Saturday (beginning at 4 p.m. at Mount Vernon):

#1 Waterloo Columbus (22-15) vs. #8 Williamsburg (19-12) … An 8-over-1 upset shouldn’t shock you.

#4 Marion (38-5) vs. #5 Benton Community (24-10) … potentially a precursor to a regional-semifinal match

#3 West Delaware (31-6) vs. #6 Vinton-Shellsburg (19-9) … probably the best of the first-round matchups

#2 Mount Vernon (31-1) vs. #7 Center Point-Urbana (10-16) … probably not the best of the first-round matchups

Other notes:

Mount Vernon’s Brianna Strong twisted an ankle late in the day Thursday against Vinton-Shellsburg, but returned. Her first attack after her return was a kill.

CPU was the day’s biggest surprise; Solon was the biggest disappointment. The Lady Spartans went 1-2 and dropped a game to Clear Creek-Amana.

Williamsburg’s Haley Wilson recorded her 1,000th career dig.

Our pick for Saturday: a #1 vs. #2 matchup in rankings (but not seedings) … Mount Vernon defeats Marion, 25-21, 26-24, in the final.
