Substate field: It’s getting clearer

We’re getting closer. Here’s the picture from area conferences and districts:

4A/MVC: City High (8-0) is the automatic qualifier from the Mississippi Division. Cedar Rapids Washington (7-1) has the inside track in the Valley Division. Cedar Falls (7-1), Cedar Rapids Xavier (6-2), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5-3) and Cedar Rapids Prairie (5-3) have qualified. If Dubuque Hempstead (4-4) beats Waterloo West (3-5) on Thursday, that will enable Hempstead to qualify, as well as Cedar Rapids Jefferson (4-4) and Dubuque Wahlert (4-4). If West wins, it’s likely that a four-win team, either from the MVC or MAC, will be shut out.

3A DISTRICT 3: Friday’s winner between Crestwood (5-3, 5-1) and Decorah (8-0, 6-0) is the district champion. The winner of Friday’s game between Western Dubuque (5-3, 4-2) and West Delaware (5-3, 4-2) grabs no worse than the third spot. Western Dubuque can be knocked out if it loses and if New Hampton (4-4, 3-3) beats Oelwein.

3A DISTRICT 4: DeWitt Central (8-0, 6-0) is the district champion, and Marion (7-1, 5-1) has wrapped up second place. Union (6-2, 4-2) has the inside track for the third slot and plays at Maquoketa (4-4, 3-3)Friday. Benton Community (5-3, 3-3) is in the mix, but must win at Marion and needs Union to beat Maquoketa.

3A DISTRICT 5: Mount Pleasant (8-0, 6-0) is the district champion. Williamsburg (7-1, 5-1) and Clear Creek Amana (6-2, 5-1) have qualified, and play for the runner-up slot at Tiffin on Friday. Oskaloosa (3-5, 3-3) gets the last spot with a win against defending state champion Keokuk (3-5, 2-4). A Keokuk win probably would mean a three-way tie between Osky, Keokuk and Washington (2-6, 2-4), and Osky has the advantage on points in that scenario.

2A DISTRICT 4: North Fayette (6-2, 5-1) has vaulted to the catbird position after knocking off Cascade (7-1, 5-1) last week. Those two teams are in a three-way deadlock with Sumner-Fredericksburg (7-1, 5-1), and all three teams are in the playoffs. North Fayette leads the points race for first place, and faces winless Jesup on Friday. Dyersville Beckman (4-4, 3-3) claims the fourth spot if it defeats MFL MarMac. If not, Monticello (5-3, 3-3) can get in if it upsets Cascade.

2A DISTRICT 5: Solon (8-0, 6-0) is the district champion after extending its win streak to 21 with a 27-0 trouncing of Iowa City Regina (7-1, 5-1) last week. The Regals will finish second; Wilton (6-2, 4-2) has wrapped up third. Tipton (4-4, 3-3) gets in unless two extremely unlikely things happen — it loses to winless Camanche and West Liberty (4-4, 3-3) shocks Solon.

2A DISTRICT 6: The champion will be determined Friday, when Mid-Prairie (7-1, 6-0) journeys to West Burlington-Notre Dame (8-0, 6-0). Both teams are playoff qualifiers, as are Davis County (5-3, 4-2) and  Sigourney-Keota (5-3, 4-2).

1A DISTRICT 3: It’s all Aplington-Parkersburg (8-0, 6-0) here, but plenty is yet to be determined. Gladbrook-Reinbeck (6-2, 4-2) has clinched a playoff spot, but four teams are chasing the other two berths. Turkey Valley (5-3, 3-3) plays at South Winneshiek (5-3, 3-3) in what amount to an elimination game while Nashua-Plainfield (5-3, 4-2) looks to wrap up a bid at home against Conrad BCLUW (5-3, 3-3).

1A DISTRICT 4: Northeast (7-1, 6-0) can wrap up the division title with a win at Maquoketa Valley (5-3, 5-1). If Maquoketa Valley wins, it probably will force a three way tie between the Rebels, the Wildcats and North Linn (6-2, 5-1). Northeast presently owns the tie-breaker advantage. Maquoketa Valley wins the district if it wins and if North Linn loses to Clayton Ridge (4-4, 3-3). Despite an 0-5 start, Alburnett (3-5, 3-3) makes the playoffs with a win or a Clayton Ridge loss.

1A DISTRICT 5: West Branch (7-1, 6-0) is the district champion, and Belle Plaine (7-1, 5-1) is in. Eddyville-Blakesburg (5-3, 4-2) probably must defeat Belle Plaine to get a postseason berth, because Iowa Valley (4-4, 3-3) and Pekin (4-4, 3-3) will be heavily favored Friday and might surpass the Rockets in a points race.

CLASS A DISTRICT 4: East Buchanan (8-0, 6-0) is the district champion. Elkader Central (6-2, 5-1), Wapsie Valley (5-3, 4-2) and Lisbon (5-3, 4-2) will join the Bucs in the postseason, though the order still is to be detemined. Lisbon entertains Central on Friday.

CLASS A DISTRICT 5: New London (8-0, 6-0) is the district champion. Lone Tree (6-2, 4-1) and WACO (4-4, 4-1) will battle for second place Friday at Wayland. Highland (2-6, 2-3) takes the fourth spot if it can get past Cardinal (1-7, 1-4) at home.

CLASS A DISTRICT 6: North Tama (8-0, 5-0) and HLV (6-2, 5-1) will finish first and second. North Mahaska (6-2, 3-2) has qualified. The other representative is Friday’s winner between BGM (4-4, 2-3) and Garwin GMG (3-5, 2-3), which play Friday at Garwin.

8-MAN DISTRICT 4: Despite a loss to West Central last week, Central City (7-1, 5-1) has punched a ticket to its first postseason dance in school history and wins the district if it beats archrival Springville at home. It’s a four-way tie for second, and only three of the teams can qualify. Preston (5-3, 4-2) and Dunkerton (5-3, 4-2) will be heavily favored Friday, which means Lansing Kee (5-3, 4-2) and West Central (6-2, 4-2) will be playing an elimination game at Maynard.

8-MAN DISTRICT 5: This quartet is set. Tri-County (7-1, 4-0) is the champion, followed by Melcher-Dallaws (6-2, 3-1), Harmony (4-4, 3-2) and Twin Cedars (5-3, 2-2).

  1. Benton Bobcat Says:

3A District 4: You claim that Benton can get in the playoffs with a win and Maquoketa loss to Union. According to my understanding of the rules, if Benton loses and Maquoketa lose….they are tied and Maquoketa gets the 4th spot because of head-to-head meeting. BUT…..what happens if they both lose…..AND Mt Vernon wins?? That makes it a 3 way tie….with each of them beating the other… the tie-breaker goes to the 13 pt rule, which favors Benton. Is this true…..or am i way off?

I think you’re right on the money. And that might be the most likely scenario for Benton getting in.
