Rivalry Saturday, Chapter V

The times aren’t determined yet for the Rivalry Saturday girls’ basketball six-pack, but the matchups are.

The date is Jan. 24, 2009. The venue, again, is the U.S. Cellular Center.

Here are the matchups, in order of appeal, with 2007-08 records:

1. Linn-Mar (22-3) vs. Ballard (23-3). Probably the preseason No. 1s in 4A and 3A. Linn-Mar was a state semifinalist last year and returns Iowa recruit Jaime Printy and future superstar Kiah Stokes. Ballard welcomes back seniors Amanda Zimmerman (ISU commitment) and Ally Jensen in a program that has knocked on the door — but has been turned away — repeatedly in the 3A field at state.

2. Springville (25-3) vs. MFL MarMac (27-1). Maybe this should be No. 1B. Or maybe just No. 1. The Orioles welcome back everything, including all-staters Katie Eiben and Sarah Davidson. MFL brings back all five starters. Both teams ought to be preseason No. 1s in their respective classes.

3. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (14-7) vs. Davenport Assumption (27-0). If Jade Rogers can sufficiently recover from a torn ACL, the Cougars should be a major player in the 4A title chase. Assumption makes the move after winning the 2A state championship last year, but won’t suffer much of a drop.

4. Marion (21-3) vs. Vinton-Shellsburg (15-8). The Indians were 3A state semifinalists last year and have returning all-staters in Morgan Paige and Brittany Fish. Vinton-Shellsburg figures to be Marion’s toughest challenger in the Wamac West.

5. Mount Vernon (19-2) vs. DeWitt Central (17-6). These appear to be the top two teams in the Wamac East. The Mustangs won their Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference crown in their final year there in 2008.

6. Maquoketa Valley (14-8) vs. North Linn (12-9). The balance of power has shifted in the Tri-Rivers Conference. Cascade and Monticello have been hit hard by graduation, so these are the most likely teams to challenge Springville.

Do you have the times for the Rivalry Saturday games on January 24, 2009? If not, where can I find them? Thanks.

I see you found the times. Say, what would Waukon’s interest be in coming down for Rivalry Saturday in 2009-10? I help Scot Moenck with the matchups, and we’re already discussing the possibility of moving next year’s Waukon-MFL MarMac game to the U.S. Cellular Center if both schools are interested. A lot probably depends on how well MFL MarMac draws for the Springville game this year. How would Waukon travel? I’m guessing pretty well.
