Next stop, the quarters

OK, so what’s with Cedar Rapids Xavier?

The Saints can’t score against Cedar Rapids Jefferson. They beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy twice. They fall to Cedar Rapids Prairie. They dominate Iowa City High?

Now they look like a team more than capable of beating Cedar Falls and advancing to the semifinals. Go figure.

City High’s demise was the only big upset around here. There were some interesting partial scores — Dubuque Hempstead led Cedar Rapids Washington, 13-3, early. Solon trailed Wilton, 21-14, in the second quarter.

Then, the cream rose. Washington scored the final 35 points. Solon finished with a 35-6 surge.

I saw Mid-Prairie take Iowa City Regina apart, 38-20. Tanner Miller has a knack for creating extra yards after contact … he rushed for 284 yards, sending his season total to 1,990. It was 31-6 before the Regals scored a couple of meaningless touchdowns late. I said here last week that Solon was two TDs better than anyone else in 2A. I think the Golden Hawks will hang close.

Best of all, our (my) first-round picks were better than the substate misfires — 19-5.
