Fifteen, there’s still time for you …

The number of area girls’ basketball unbeatens stands at 15.

That’s a high number for this deep into the season. Tuesday’s wave of postponements took away an opportunity to eliminate some of them, but still … that’s a high number for mid-December, especially since the season started earlier this year.

However, several of them are going to take a hit, particularly on Saturday, when unbeaten-vs.-unbeaten matchups are common. Cedar Rapids Jefferson travels to MFL MarMac (“The whole town will be there,” Larry Niemeyer expects), Springville meets Midland and West Branch takes on Highland.

Here they are, with weekend obstacles:

CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON (5-0): Hosts Cedar Rapids Xavier tonight, at MFL MarMac Saturday.

CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON  (3-0): Hosts Waterloo East tonight.

DECORAH  (4-0): At Waverly-Shell Rock tonight, hosts Cedar Falls Saturday.

HIGHLAND  (3-0): At Winfield-Mount Union tonight, hosts West Branch Saturday.

LINN-MAR  (6-0): Hosts Dubuque Senior tonight.

MARION (3-0): At Independence tonight.

MFL MAR MAC (3-0): Hosts Sumner-Fredericksburg tonight, hosts Cedar Rapids Jefferson Saturday.

MIDLAND (3-0): At Calamus-Wheatland tonight, hosts Springville Saturday.

NORTH LINN (3-0): At Springville tonight, at Janesville Saturday.

SIGOURNEY (4-0): Hosts Tri-County tonight.

SPRINGVILLE (2-0): Hosts North Linn tonight, at Midland Saturday.

TIPTON (5-0): Hosts Wilton tonight.

TURKEY VALLEY  (4-0): Hosts Postville tonight, at New Hampton Saturday.

WAUKON (5-0): Idle.

WEST BRANCH (5-0): At North Cedar tonight, at Highland Saturday.

My guess: the number shrinks from 15 to nine by the end of the night Saturday. And a hint: Waukon’s one of those still standing.

10 by my count…pretty close. Than again, just doing the math made this guess an pretty educated one.

I thought Cedar Rapids Jefferson would knock MFL MarMac from the list of unbeatens. Looks like MFL outplayed them by quite a bit. Decorah plays Waukon Tuesday, which will bump one of them.

By the way (weather permitting), I think I’m headed your way Tuesday for Cascade-Springville.

MFL MarMac is solid again this year and will probably go through the regular season without a loss (unless Springville can find a way to win in Cedar Rapids). With Davenport Assumption moving to 3A they should win their first state title in 2009.

Decorah looked good against Cedar Falls last Saturday night and will provide a challenge at Waukon Tuesday in a battle of unbeatens. Waukon is #10 and Decorah #13 so one of them should be knocked from the rankings.

mfl returned everyone from last year except one senior, and they have beat some good competition so far like decorah, valley community, cedar rapids jefferson and also cresco, they face a challenge against springville at rivarly weekend but i see mfl mar mac as the favorite for the 2a title.
