42nd Street showdown

The neighborhood border brawl between Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Xavier tonight has serious title implications in the MVC Mississippi Division.

Kennedy (14-3, 10-3) is the second-hottest team in the league (behind Linn-Mar, of course). The Cougars have won six straight games and 12 of their last 13. They defeated Xavier, 52-44, Dec. 19 at home in the final game they played without Jade Rogers.

Xavier (12-6, 9-4) has been up and down. The Saints have lost two of their last three, but one of those losses was a game against Linn-Mar that they led after three quarters. A win tonight would put the Saints in a first-place tie with the Cougars — and give Xavier the edge because it plays its final two MVC games at home.

Here’s a peek at the MVC Mississippi Division race, with remaining schedule for the title contenders:

Cedar Rapids Kennedy (14-3, 10-3): at Xavier tonight, at Waterloo West Tuesday, at Cedar Rapids Washington Feb. 13, Marion (home) Feb. 14.

Dubuque Wahlert (13-5, 9-4): Dubuque Hempstead (home) Friday, Iowa City High (home) Tuesday, at Dubuque Senior Feb. 13.

Iowa City High (13-4, 9-4): at Iowa City West Friday, Muscatine (home) Saturday, at Dubuque Wahlert Tuesday, at Cedar Rapids Xavier Feb. 13.

Cedar Rapids Xavier (12-6, 9-4): Kennedy (home) tonight, Cedar Rapids Washington (home) Monday, Iowa City High (home) Feb. 13.

Iowa City West (13-5, 8-5): Iowa City High (home) Friday, Cedar Falls (home) Tuesday, Linn-Mar (home) Feb. 13.
