Now it’s a two-game sprint

Every two or three weeks, the Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls’ basketball team lets out a clunker.

The last one came last night at Cedar Rapids Xavier, a 51-32 loss that turns the MVC Mississippi Division race into a sprint to the finish.

Now, the advantage swings to Xavier (13-6, 10-4) and Dubuque Wahlert (13-5, 9-4). Xavier hosts its last two games against Cedar Rapids Washington and Iowa City High while Wahlert hosts two of three and will be favored in all of them.

For Kennedy (14-4, 10-4), its final two — against Waterloo West and Washington — are on the road. City High (13-4, 9-4) has its destiny in its own hands, but still has road dates against Iowa City West, Wahlert and Xavier. Brutal.

Back to Kennedy. When the Cougars are good, they are very, very good, a team worthy of a top-five ranking. They had been recently (i.e., Davenport Assumption, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Springville). When they’re bad, they get trampled. All four of their losses have been ugly double-digit defeats. It’s a team that makes you scratch your head.

On to tonight. I’ve got Washington at Jefferson in an early start.
