MVC Mississippi: Who wants this thing?

The MVC Mississippi Division race is turning into a game of hot potato.

Nobody can gain a firm handle on it.

Cedar Rapids Xavier was the most recent frontrunner to stumble, dropping a 50-44 decision — at home — to Cedar Rapids Washington.

That cuts the cast of co-leaders to two — Cedar Rapids Kennedy (14-4 overall) and Dubuque Wahlert (14-5 overall) are 10-4 in the MVC. Both have stiff challenges tonight: Kennedy travels to surging Waterloo West while Wahlert hosts Iowa City High (14-5, 9-5), which still has title hopes if it can win out. The Little Hawks play at Xavier (13-7, 10-5) on Friday.

Kennedy can’t be too grateful to Washington: The Cougars play the Warriors on the road Friday and have lost to the Warriors 10 straight times.

Elsewhere around the area:

Tipton wrapped up a share of the maiden Cedar Valley Conference title Monday with a 61-46 win over Wilton. The Tigers (20-1, 13-1) can win it outright if Wilton upsets Iowa City Regina (16-4, 12-1) tonight.

Springville concluded a perfect Tri-Rivers campaign Monday with a 56-51 triumph over Maquoketa Valley. The Orioles finished 16-0 in the league and take a 20-1 mark into regionals.

MFL MarMac clinched its sixth straight Upper Iowa Conference crown with a 62-54 win over Turkey Valley. Like Springville, the Bulldogs are 20-1 overall, 16-0 in their league.
