Students from Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Linn-Mar are teaming up to support local flood recovery.
The two student government groups are jointly selling unique ‘Catfight’ T-shirts for students from both schools to wear at Tuesday’s Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball showdown at Kennedy.
Kennedy students will wear white shirts; Linn-Mar students will wear black T-shirts. Each shirt will have the same design. Both schools are selling the shirts for $10.
“The two student groups have worked very well together and we hope the project is a big success,” said Joe Benedict, Kennedy student government advisor. “It has been a pleasure for us to work with the students and staff at Linn Mar.”
During halftime of Tuesday’s game, proceeds from the shirt sale at Linn-Mar will be presented to the Cedar Rapids Flood Recovery Fund. Funds from the Kennedy sale will be presented to Theatre Cedar Rapids. The theater was badly damaged in the June flood.
“Our hope with this project is two-fold,” said Kennedy Athletics Director Aaron Stecker. “First and foremost we hope to provide some extra help to a local organization that was devastated by the flood this past summer. Theater Cedar Rapids has been such a positive influence in our community and our respective student groups are excited to play a part in helping them get back on their feet. We also hope to help our students better understand what serving the community is all about.
“This basketball game is a big deal to both schools – we have exceptional students and athletes at both Linn-Mar and Kennedy who have worked hard to put themselves in this successful position,” Stecker said. “We also want our students and school communities to understand that with success comes responsibility. We have a responsibility to continue to serve our community and raise awareness for those organizations and individuals that need our help after this past summer.”
Tipoff will be at 6 p.m. for the sophomores, 7:30 pm for the varsity. Doors will open at 5.
