Bixler resigns at North Cedar

Mike Bixler, who coached North Cedar to the 2000 Class 2A girls’ basketball state championship, has turned in his resignation, according to a source within the Stanwood-based high school.

Aided by the Cavey sisters (Ann and Jamie), Bixler was extremely successful in the years immediately after the Lincoln/Clarence-Lowden merger. He led the Knights to a runner-up finish in 1996, the year after the reorganization. North Cedar returned to state in 1998 and lost in the first round to Solon.

It all came together in 2000, when North Cedar upset Council Bluffs St. Albert for the championship.

But the program has been in steady decline since. Once a regular contender in the Big East Conference, North Cedar slid in recent years. And in the school’s first year in the Cedar Valley Conference, the Knights went 6-16 overall and finished in a sixth-place tie in the eight-team league at 4-10.

The Knights were eliminated from postseason play in the first round by West Branch.
