‘Huge statement’ for Linn-Mar

CEDAR RAPIDS — Something had to give.

In the end, it was Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The Cougars gave up a lot more than usual.

Linn-Mar cut the vaunted Kennedy man-to-man defense to ribbons in a 79-48 Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball laugher last night at Kennedy.

The Lions drove the lane relentlessly, scoring baskets and drawing fouls. Linn-Mar shot 29 free throws, making 20. In the second half, the Lions were in the bonus with less than 4 minutes elapsed.

“We’re a lot better when we’re aggressive and getting to the line than when we’re shooting 3-pointers,” said Linn-Mar’s Shane Benton, who scored 13 points off the bench.

Kennedy entered the game with a 39-point-per-game defensive average. Linn-Mar was flirting with that number by halftime. The Lions took the drama out of the game early, building a 38-17 halftime lead and coasting from there.

By the end of the third quarter, a few empty seats were visible on the Kennedy side of a sellout crowd announced at 2,180. A few became a lot as the fourth period unfolded.

“We just did a heck of a job,” said Linn-Mar’s Zach Bohannon, who led all scorers with 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. “We’re at our best when we’re cutting off the dribble. We kept running right at them, all the way to the end.”

The Lions entered the game averaging about 75 points per game, and surpassed that figure Tuesday.

“We got everyone involved,” Benton said. “This was a huge statement. We know we can beat anybody.”
