10 a.m. — We’re hooked up and under way for the first game of the day … Ackley AGWSR and New London. Points are expected to be scarce. AGWSR is allowing 21.9 points per game, on track to set a state record for defensive average.
10:05 a.m. — The system is unbearably slow. Hopefully, things perk up. Otherwise, it’s going to be a long, slow week.
10:12 a.m. — Going to form. It’s 4-4, 2:00 left in the 1st quarter. They’re chanting for “de-fense.” They’re getting it.
10:18 a.m. — Both schools brought a pep band, but they’re tough to hear in such a large, and fairly empty) arena.
10:20 a.m. — First “call it both ways” plea of the tournament. There’ll be more.
10:23 a.m. — AGWSR won the race to double digits. It’s 10-7, midway through the 2nd quarter.
10:32 a.m. — Halftime. AGWSR, 17-14. First drill team of the tournament. PCM Jazz Creation. Really loud music.
10:53 a.m. — AGWSR leads 31-18 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. A hunch … the Cougars have enough points to win.
11:59 a.m. — They did. AGWSR wins 40-29. George-Little Rock and Mason City Newman are in a more aesthetically pleasing game. GLR leads 25-20, late in the first half.
12:01 p.m. — GLR Coach Heather Block is one of the more intense coaches you’ll find.
12:19 p.m. — Newman starts the second half with a pair of 3-pointers and closes within 34-30.
12:30 p.m. — GLR 49-42, end of 3 quarters. You wouldn’t know so by the tone of the GLR fans.
12:35 p.m. — Black headbands for the GLR gals. “Call it both ways,” request the GLR fans. Many of them stayed at the same hotel as me. They were much more pleasant at breakfast.
12:58 p.m. — George-Little Rock 65, Mason City Newman 53. Final.
1:18 p.m. — North Butler and Coon Rapids-Bayard ready to start. North Butler coach Kevin Clipperton is on crutches.
1:36 p.m. — Upset brewing? Coon Rapids-Bayard leads North Butler 19-11 early in the second quarter. A young girl, maybe third grade, is yelling “Shot!” every time a CRB player takes a shot. It would be kind of maddening, except it’s such a cute little voice.
1:51 p.m. — North Butler shaves a 10-point deficit to 27-24 at halftime.
2:10 p.m. — Bearcats lead 33-31, their first lead in a long time. CRB girls are wearing white headbands. Wish they were playing GLR.
2:15 p.m. — Bobbi Boomgarden 3-pointer and steal for NB. Bearcats 36-31, 7:35 left.
2:17 p.m. — I don’t see the media guy from North Butler with the camera and the bibs. Where is he??
2:22 p.m. — Another trey by NB. 40-31, 3 minutes to go.
2:31 p.m. — CRB rallies, down 40-39 with 0:11 and has the ball …
2:33 p.m. — But North Butler defends well and forces a bad shot. Bearcats win 40-39. More heartbreak for CRB … Remember state volleyball? They had six match points but let them all slip away against Springville.
That’s it for now. Remember to join my live chat at 4 p.m. I’m covering Springville at 5 and Tipton at 8, so blogging could be minimal.
