Tuesday afternoon tidbits

Here’s a link to Liz Martin’s photo gallery from the tournament:

10:17 a.m. — Crowd of the tournament so far: Central Decatur. And its not even close. The Cardinal fans have claimed three full sections on their side, with good portions of two more. Assuming everything is closed in Leon and its suburbs.

10:22 a.m. — Halftime. Central Decatur 24, Hinton 22. All of Hinton’s 11 baskets were layups or putbacks.

10:22 a.m. — Storm Lake poms are doing some routine to somebody called Jelly Head.

10:35 a.m. — Got to say, I’m pleasantly surprised with Central Decatur. The rule of thumb is that teams south of Highway 34 just aren’t competitive, regardless of record. The Cardinals are disspelling that myth. They’re still hanging with Hinton, up 2 midway through the 3rd quarter.

10:40 a.m. — Replays at the state tournament are sponsored by “Teens Talking Sex Together.”

10:44 a.m. — Computer working well. Actually fairly fast. Too good to be true?

10:45 a.m. — Back and forth. Hinton by 4, now CD by 1 and the ball.

10:49 a.m. — Hinton 33-32, end of 3rd quarter.

10:58 a.m. — Hinton takes the biggest lead of the game, 41-35, 4:20 left.

11:07 a.m. — Lead grew to 11. It’s 52-45 now, half-minute to play. Nice fast game. I like those.

11:11 a.m. — Hinton’s a 54-45 winner. That’s a palendrome. I think that’s the word. Cascade and Denver should be on time or close to it.

11:20 a.m. — The first three 2A quarterfinal winners scored 55, 55 and 54 points. Here’s a lock: The Denver-Cascade winner won’t get that high.

11:33 a.m. — We’re underway.

11:40 p.m. — Both offenses are actually flowing reasonably well. 6-6, 3:04 1st.

11:42 a.m. — Springville girls have made their way behind the Cascade bench. Tri-Rivers unity.

11:44 a.m. — Cascade 10-6, but Goedken 2 fouls.

11:46 a.m. — Amber Meyer 3 at buzzer. Cascade 13-6 after one quarter.

11:50 a.m. — Meyer shouldn’t wear #40. She should be like #4. Just one FG in the second quarter. It’s 13-8, 4:19 2nd.

12:01 p.m. — Denver gets within 15-13, but Cascade scores the last 7 of the half for a 22-13 lead. Goedken’s still scoreless. Meyer has 7 points.

12:13 p.m. — Denver shot 28 percent in the first half. Both teams have warmed up somewhat. Cascade leads 29-19, 6:01 in the 3rd.

12:18 p.m. — Goedken 3rd foul. Cascade leads 31-22. 3:23 3rd. Goedken has 2 points, but 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

12:25 p.m. — Hoffman 3 and a basket by Reiter. 39-26, end of 3.

12:30 p.m. — Cascade loses only Goedken to graduation. They’re the team to beat in the Tr-Rivers in 2009-10.

12:34 p.m. — Coaches’ gallery: O’Donnell, Moenck, Leighty, Kremer, Wright.

12:40 p.m. — Cascade students’ chant: “Back on Thursday.”

12:41 p.m. — It’s a final: Cascade 49-34.

12:42 p.m. — Waukon in 15-20 minutes.

1:20 p.m. — Writing Cascade story. Waukon leads 15-6 after a quarter. Indians look very impressive.

1:38 p.m. — Waukon 25-13 at halftime.

1:51 p.m. — Cascade story is written and posted. Waukon’s Logan Hjerleid is out with an injury.

1:54 p.m. — Waukon’s scoreless through 3 minutes of in the second half. Still leads 25-15.

2:03 p.m. — Hjerleid’s back in. Made a free throw to push lead to 36-19. Now it’s 36-23.

2:09 p.m. — Waukon 40-26, end of 3rd.

2:18 p.m. — It’s turning into a bloodbath. Waukon’s up 48-34. Berger was shoved for an intentional foul.

2:32 p.m. — It’s a final: Waukon, 56-39. Remember … live chat at 4:00, computer willing.
