4A quarterfinal: Kennedy vs. Waukee

11:18 a.m. — We are 15 minutes to game time. Winner gets #2 Sioux City North, which defeated Indianola, 78-55. That game featured 64 turnovers, 36 by the Indians.

11:22 a.m. — A moment to pause and brag. I’m 13-0 on my picks.

11:23 a.m. — Kennedy crowd will be mostly family. I guess it’s finals week.

11:35 a.m. — Intros. Tip to come. Sandy (sp? Sandi?) Dierks is Kennedy’s sportsmanship rep. Springville girls have made their way into the Kennedy student section. They’re a good chunk of it. Waukee fans have Kennedy fans outnumbered about 5-to-1.

11:36 a.m. — Dennis Roloff is sans familiar moustache. Gotta admit, the clean look is a good look on him.

11:40 a.m. — Kennedy scores first on a Brightwell basket inside. CRK 2-0.

11:42 a.m. — Laura Brewer 3 for Waukee, then Boenish score/foul for CRK. Missed FT, rebound to CRK, Duke 1 of 2 FTs. CRK 5-3.

11:44 a.m. — CRK has drawn 4 fouls on the Warriors. Rogers scores inside, then a steal and a foul. Duke will shoot 2 FTs. CRK 7-3. Time, Waukee. Duke swishes them both. 9-3 CRK.

11:46 a.m. — Waukee sandwiches a pair of treys around a three-point play by Rogers. CRK 12-9.

11:50 a.m. — Bucket by Rogers, then another by Boenish. CRK is outhustling the Warriors and leads 16-9.

11:53 a.m. — First non-3 FG for Waukee. 16-11.

11:53 a.m. — Another 3 by Fegen. CRK 16-14 after one quarter. No band for Kennedy either.

11:55 a.m. — Trey for Goodson gives Waukee the lead. Rogers answers from down low. CRK 18-17.

11:57 a.m. — Boenish scores off steal, then Waukee counters, then Boenish scores and draws a foul (Hoggs’ 3rd). CRK 22-19.

11:59 a.m. — Boenish scores from in the lane. She has 10. CRK 24-19. Kennedy’s in the bonus. Hahn FT good, good. CRK 26-19 5:03 2nd.

12:02 p.m. — Boenish scores again, from the elbow. She’s got 12. CRK 28-19. Timeout Waukee 3:45 2nd.

12:03 p.m. — Orton snaps CRK 8-0 run with 2 FTs.

12:04 p.m. — Boenish putback, then Cougars draw a charge.

12:05 p.m. — Rogers rebound, FT good, FT good. CRK 32-21. 2:30 2nd. Cougars looking like they should have looked all season.

12:08 p.m. — Orton scores for Waukee. Steal and layup for Cassie Garrett. Hogg banks one in at the buzzer. Suddenly it’s 32-27 at halftime.

12:21 p.m. — Waukee comes up empty on first possession. Rogers scores and is fouled. 35-27.

12:22 p.m. — Kennedy alum Anne O’Neil is in the house, taking notes for later in the week. I presume she’ll be the color commentator again this year.

12:24 p.m. — Orton 1 of 2 FTs. Rogers scores on feed from Duke. 37-28, 6:30 3rd.

12:25 p.m. — Duke splashes a trey, Kennedy’s first of the game. CRK biggest lead of the game at 40-28.

12:26 p.m. — Hogg 1 of 2 FTs. Boenish scores on putback. CRK 42-29 4:22 3rd.

12:28 p.m. — Hogg scores for first Waukee FG of 2nd half.

12:30 p.m. — Duke steal and layup, then forces a loose ball. Timeout Waukee. CRK 44-31, 3:32 3rd.

12:31 p.m. — Hogg whistled for 4th foul.

12:32 p.m. — Duke goes back door for layup. 46-31.

12:33 p.m. — Spellerberg apparently powers the ball through a block for a basket, but it’s taken away. Jump ball is called. Waukee ball. Huh?

12:35 p.m. — Waukee scores, then Boyer gets looks for a basket inside.

12:37 p.m. — Waukee gets within 11, then Spellerberg banks in a 3 at the horn. 51-37 after 3 quarters. It’s Kennedy’s day.

12:39 p.m. — Cougars running some clock. Down to 7 minutes to go.

12:40 p.m. — Duke ends a 90-second possession with a baseline drive. 53-37, 6:37 left. Boenish and Rogers 16 apiece, 12 for Duke.

12:42 p.m. — Two Waukee FTs. Rogers from Duke. 55-39.

12:43 p.m. — Timeout CRK, 55-39, 5:19 to go.

12:45 p.m. — Hogg, the Warriors’ leading scorer, fouls out. Meier hits 2 FTs. 57-39. Brightwell goes backdoor for a bucket for a 20-point lead. CRK is shooting 57 percent.

12:52 p.m. — It’s 66-44, 2:10 left. Xavier students kicked the Springville girls out of their seats. Subs in for Kennedy.

1:00 p.m. — It’s a final. Kennedy 68, Waukee 50 .. Rogers: 20 points, 14 boards, Boenish 17 points, Duke 14. Time for quotes and such. Linn-Mar and Xavier starts in 15 minutes.

    64 turnovers in the first game you say…WOW. There must be something in the air down there this year.

    Would anyone agree that some of the turnovers are caused by the officials letting them play alot more down there than most teams are used to? Meaning getting away with more body contact, hand checking etc.

    I for one like it that way, but understand there were more Turnovers because of that type of play

    Could be, but I’m thinking that would depend on the game and the refs. In the Springville game on Monday the refs blew the whistle relentlessly…like every time someone moved…and it wasn’t one sided. We committed a lot of turnovers…then again our style of play lends itself to high turnovers.
