DES MOINES — That didn’t take long.

IKM-Manning won a girls’ basketball state championship in its first year as a merged school, smashing Cascade, 50-31, in the Class 2A final last night at Wells Fargo Arena.

Formerly bitter rivals, IKM and Manning came together and constructed a special season. The third-rated Wolves finished 26-2, winning all three of their state-tournament games convincingly.

“We’d been competing against each other since third or fourth grade,” said Bailey Halbur, the all-tournament captain. “Coach (Gene) Rasmussen really got us to work together and play well.”

Halbur and Katie Schechinger — former rivals in the post — scored 16 points apiece for the Wolves. Both made the all-tournament team.

Cascade’s Amber Meyer and Chanda Goedken joined them, as did Mackenzie Small of Hinton and Kelsey Sukovaty of Manson-Northwest Webster.

The Wolves broke in front immediately. IKM-Manning led 12-2 after one quarter and enjoyed a 21-10 advantage at intermission.

Cascade (24-4) had a memorable postseason, knocking off No. 1 MFL MarMac in the regional finals and toppling previously unbeaten Hinton in the semifinals.

But the Cougars couldn’t match the Wolves’ size. Schechinger stands 6-foot-3, Halbur 6-1.

“They’re a great team, a superb basketball team,” said Cascade Coach Mike Sconsa. “We didn’t come ready to play at the beginning, and they made us pay.

“The last three quarters, the kids fought. That’s an outstanding team we lost to today.”

Meyer led the Cougars with 12 points. Holly Hosch posted six points and nine rebounds.

“We didn’t control tempo very well,” Meyer said. “We pushed ourselves more than usual.”

The Cougars shot 28 percent, making 12 of 43 field goal attempts.
