Boys track ’09: Teams to watch

2008 state finish — 7th in Class 4A, 30 points.

Key returners — Kyle Slaymaker, sr.

Outlook — A member of four relays that placed at state last year, Slaymaker will be depended on heavily. The Cougars were impressive at the MVC Indoor meet, which boosts optimism.

2008 state finish — 6th in Class 4A, 32.25 points.

Key returners — Ronnie Henderson, jr., Lewi Manirumva, sr., Keenan Davis, sr.

Outlook — This team has potential state-level scorers at most any turn. The Warriors will be strong in the sprint relays again and Manirumva gives them a distance ace. This is a potential top-five 4A team.

2008 state finish — 1st in Class 3A, 100.5 points.

Key returners — Ryan Sander, jr., Brennan McAllister, sr., Derek Wollner, sr., Chase Cooling, sr.

Outlook — After rolling to 3A state titles each of the last two years, the Saints move up to join the big schools. They’ll certainly be competitive behind a solid cast. Their 400-meter relay time of 43.71 leads the MVC.

2008 state finish — 2nd in Class 4A, 74 points.

Key returners — Alonzo Markham, sr., Frank Canady, jr.

Outlook — Graduation slapped the Trojans somewhat after a runner-up season, but they’ll reload. Canady already has run a sub-4:30 1,600, and the Trojans should be strong as always in the field events.

2008 state finish — 6th in Class 3A, 30 points.

Key returners — Casey Negrete, sr.

Outlook — The Demons perennially are one of the state’s best 3A programs, and that should continue. They’ll build around Negrete, who spearheaded the relays last year.
