Slaymaker stars at John Ask

CEDAR RAPIDS — According to Dennis Roloff, Kyle Slaymaker “loves to compete and hates to lose.

“Pretty good combination, huh?”

Pretty good runner.

Slaymaker picked up two victories at the John Ask Relays boys’ track Saturday afternoon at Saints Field, anchoring Cedar Rapids Kennedy to the 3,200-meter relay title and capturing the 200 solo event.

If it seems Slaymaker, a senior, is a step ahead of his competition, credit an ambitious offseason workout regimen that allowed him to hit the ground running, so to speak, when the season began.

“I feel like I’m starting this season faster than I finished last year,” Slaymaker said. “We focused a lot on my foot speed. That made me faster in the 200, which in turn helped my 400 and 800.”

On a chilly, breezy afternoon, Slaymaker anchored the Cougars from behind in the 3,200-relay. His 2:00.0 split brought Kennedy home in 8:17.52.

In the 200, he was timed in 23.03 seconds.

Slaymaker was a four-event placewinner at state last year, including a fifth-place finish in the 800 (1:55.1). His versatility creates options.

“We could put him in the 4-by-2, the 4-by-4, the 4-by-8 and the medley,” said Roloff, the Cougars’ head coach. “On the other hand, you could drop a baton before he gets to run. Plus, with the fact that individual races count as many points as relays, maybe individual events are the way to go.

“If he didn’t peak too early, he has an opportunity to be a state champion. He’ll give every ounce of effort to be the best he can be.”

Slaymaker has signed to run at Northern Iowa.

In other highlights:

Lewi Manirumva of Cedar Rapids Washington won his 3,200-meter showdown with Iowa City West’s Frank Canady, pulling away with about 800 meters to go and winning in 9:34.60.

Nate Hutcheson of Linn-Mar won the high jump, clearing 6-2, and ran on the Lions’ winning shuttle hurdle relay.

A computer glitch slowed results. Team scores were not available.
