Xavier seeking boys’ basketball coach

CEDAR RAPIDS — Xavier High School is looking for a boys’ basketball coach. Again.

Joe Barrer

Joe Barrer accepted the varsity job at Davenport Assumption, his alma mater, late Wednesday. The hiring was announced today by both Assumption and Xavier.

“I learned (about the job opening) when everyone else learned, when it was in the paper,” Barrer told the Quad-City Times today. “It was something (that) immediately interested me, it being my alma mater. The opportunity to go back there has always been a dream job of mine.

“(Xavier) has been awesome, and it’s very tough to leave. There’s always one job you can’t turn down, and for me, this is that one.”

Barrer, 28, was a key member of Assumption’s Class 3A state-championship team in 1999.

His departure means Xavier will have its fourth coach in four seasons when the 2009-10 season rolls around. Dick Breitbach retired after the 2006-07 season, then Adam Loria was there for a year before leaving for Iowa City High — his alma mater.

“We’ve had three solid coaches in a row. We’ve been a bit of a victim of circumstances with (Loria and Barrer), a lot of heartstrings tugging them to come back,” said Xavier Athletics Director Mike Winker.

“I’m disappointed for the kids and their parents. Next year’s seniors will have four coaches in four years. But I really liked Joe and I wish him the best.”

Xavier was 8-15 last season.

Winker said a search for a new coach will begin immediately.
