CEDAR RAPIDS — Tunnel vision served Jess Tomash just fine.

Tomash, a senior at Cedar Rapids Prairie, put on her blinders and fired a consistent round to win the individual title at the CRANDIC girls’ golf tournament at a windy Twin Pines Golf Course on Wednesday.

She shot 82, coming from three strokes back at the turn to beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Alex Zenor by three.

“I hit a lot of good shots. A few bad ones too, but I’ve worked on my short game a lot,” said Tomash, who will play at Truman State University next year.

Iowa City West claimed the team title, shooting 361 and edging Cedar Rapids Xavier by four strokes. The Women of Troy and the Saints both had three golfers in the top 10.

“We have a very balanced team,” said West Coach Mary Goodfellow, whose daughters Madison and Bailey finished third (86) and seventh (90). “Our top three players have played together for three summers now. They’ve played a lot of summer golf and it shows up in the spring.”

Tomash was placed a group behind Zenor, but insisted that she didn’t play much attention to what was going on in front of her.

“I wasn’t looking at the group in front of me or the group behind me,” she said. “I was focusing on my game.”

Zenor, who will play at the University of Northern Iowa next year, sizzled early. She was 1-under-par through four holes and shot 38 on the front nine before struggling late. Back-to-back double bogeys at 12 and 13 opened the door for Tomash, and she capitalized.

The tournament was played in windy conditions. Tomash has grown accustomed to it.

“Actually, the wind was better than it was (in Tuesday’s meet at Iowa City),” she said. “It did play a factor. I just had to calculate shots and be more accurate.”

Xavier’s runner-up finish is believed to be its best in CRANDIC competition. Kimmy Askelson led the Saints with a fourth-place score of 87.

Iowa City High (383) placed third. Iowa City Regina (384), last year’s champion, was fourth.
