Nominations for the 2009 Gazette Athletes of the Year are now open.

Five male finalists and five female finalists will be featured Aug. 9. The winners will be spotlighted Aug. 16. Last year’s winners were B.J. Hermsen of West Delaware and Kelly Krei of Iowa City High.
This year’s early list of contenders includes Matt Morrison of Solon, Keenan Davis of Cedar Rapids Washington, Drew Clark of MarionĀ and Tyler Wedemeier of West Central on the boys’ side, Sam Rinehart of Marion, Shelby Kintzel of Mount Vernon, Sara Stoakes of North Tama and Katie Eiben and Sarah Davidson of Springville in the girls’ race.

Nominations should be sent by July 4.

They have to be seniors. They have to be good athletes. Good character and academics are plusses. Coaches and ADs are most welcome to send resumes on the kids.
