Boys’ state soccer: A change of venue

Due to extensive damage to the playing fields as James Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines, the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced Tuesday that the boys’ state soccer tournament will be moved to high school fields.

“We are disappointed for the athletes, families and coaches that the tournament is being moved, but it is the right decision,” said Don Tripp, Des Moines Park and Recreation director. “We will continue to work hard to bring the Cownie fields back to the high level expected and deserved for this significant championship.”

Floods extensively damaged the complex, and subsequent weather conditions have slowed renovation.

Quarterfinal games on June 4 and semifinals June 5 will be played at Southeast Polk (3A), West Des Moines Valley (2A) and Urbandale (1A).

Consolation games June 6 are at Southeast Polk. The championships are June 6 at Urbandale — 1A at noon, 2A at 2:30 p.m., 3A at 5 p.m.
