DES MOINES — Sara Stoakes chose her state itinerary based on level of enjoyment.

She dominated the sprints in the past. She needed a new challenge.

“I wanted to do the races that would be most challenging,” said Stoakes, a senior at North Tama. “A challenge is fun. That’s what it takes to be good. You have to enjoy a challenge.”

Stoakes enjoyed the Class 1A 400-meter dash Thursday, setting a small-school state-meet record (56.08 seconds) in the process.

The Kansas State University recruit was in control throughout, winning by more than 2 seconds. It was her ninth state-meet gold medal.

“I thought I was on pretty good pace because I caught the first two girls pretty quick,” said Stoakes, who ran in Lane 4.

Stoakes will compete in the 400-meter hurdles Friday, the 800 Saturday morning and the 1,500 Saturday afternoon. One of the most versatile runners in state history (she has won state titles in everything from the 100 in track to 4,000 in cross country), Stoakes has competed in every individual track event this spring other than the 100 hurdles and the 3,000.

Twin Cedars is the 1A team leader after five events, with 16 points. Southern Cal is second with 14. North Tama, the three-time defending champion, is tied for third with 10.

Jill Lensing of Turkey Valley provided the other area 1A highlight, placing third in the shot put.
