DES MOINES — Iowa City High is back. Iowa City West’s reign is over.

And it took an outstanding team to beat them both.

Down 15 points with two events remaining, Waukee closed fast and won the Class 4A girls’ championship at the state track meet Saturday at the state track meet.

The Warriors scored 98 points, City High tallied 97. West, which was bidding to become the first big school team to win four straight titles, was third with 94.

“We were beaten by a wonderful team,” said City High’s Mariah Jordan, the 100-meter hurdles champion. “But still, this is one of the best feelings in the world.”

City High was an un-City-like sixth last year. But this time, the Little Hawks took the lead into the final event before Waukee passed them by winning the 400-meter relay in an all-time Iowa best 48.15, then finishing second to Sioux City East in the 1,600 relay.

“Sixteen weeks ago, we weren’t on anybody’s radar except our own,” said City Coach Tom Mittman. “We had three great days of competition.”

He pointed to the back of one of his girls’ T-shirts, one that donned the slogan “Every Person Counts.”

Jordan took her hurdles crown in 14.83 seconds.

“I felt it when I crossed the finish line, but I needed to see it on the board,” Jordan said.

“I was injured at the beginning of the season, and (the) Drake (Relays were) a disppointment for me. My parents told me to keep fighting. The last month, each Sunday, I worked on my starts. I wanted to get out of the blocks and maintain that. I could hear my dad yelling, ‘Go! Go! Go!’ ”

Jessica Gehrke of West won the 100-meter dash in a 4A-record 12.09 seconds.

“Start to finish, it was a good race for me,” said Gehrke, who later finished second to Waukee’s Whitney Westrum. “I had hoped for a good start, I kept the speed the whole way and I added a little push at the end. That helped me win the race.”

But in the end, Waukee had too many stars. The Warriors won four events Saturday — Colette Gnade prevailed in a loaded 800 field in 2:08.84, Whitney Westrum took the 200, and the Warriors won the shuttle hurdle and 4×100 relays.

“I tip my hat to them,” said West Coach Mike Parker. “They’re full of stars. And I tip my hat to City as well. They fought like crazy.

“Those two teams were better than us today.”

Sioux City East’s time of 3:48.39 in the 1,600 relay was an all-time Iowa best.
