CEDAR RAPIDS — Four players in double digits.
One balanced, veteran team to state.
Each of Iowa City High’s four scoring players broke 100, and the Little Hawks won a Class 4A girls’ regional golf tournament Tuesday at Gardner Golf Course.
City High shot 373, which was seven strokes better than Muscatine. The Muskies emerged from a tightly knit group of four teams to claim the second state spot. Muscatine shot 380, followed by Pleasant Valley (383), Bettendorf (385) and Davenport Central (385).
State is Monday and Tuesday at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
Junior McKayla Kennedy led the Little Hawks with a fourth-place individual finish. Kennedy shot 84. City’s other scorers were Jenna Kleingartner (95), Karley Boardman (97) and Kenzie DeMoss (97).
The Little Hawks’ six-player roster consists of four seniors and two juniors.
Ashley Hogenson of Muscatine was the individual medalist, shooting 77, four strokes better than Leah Burich of Bettendorf.
The fifth individual state qualifier was Chrissie McGaffigan of Bettendorf, a two-time state tennis champion who no longer competes in that sport in high school competition. A Notre Dame tennis recruit, McGaffigan plays varsity golf and plays on the junior tennis tournament circuit.
