If district scores mean anything, the Class 3A boys’ state golf tournament is anybody’s race.
Seven of the eight teams qualified with scores within 13 strokes of each other.
Washington (Iowa) was fourth last year, and the Demons’ district tally of 303 is best among the qualifiers.
The 3A tournament is at The Harvester Golf Club, Rhodes. The 2A competition is at Lake Panorama National Resort, Panorama, while the 1A event is at Spring Valley Golf Course, Livermore. Tee time is noon Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.
Decorah and Ballard are among the top cluster of teams in 3A, while 2008 runner-up Jake Thomas of Independence appears to be the player to beat. Thomas shot 66 at districts.
Dyersville Beckman was eighth in 2A last year, but posted the top district score (308) last week. Carroll Kuemper is expected to challenge.
In 1A, Grundy Center, Treynor and Mason City Newman look like the teams to beat. Lisbon sophomore Tyler Gunderson ought to contend for individual honors. He was fifth last year as a freshman.
