MUSCATINE — One more chance. And probably the best chance yet.

Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy advanced to the championship game for the fourth straight season, handling No. 4 Ankeny, 2-0, in a Class 2A semifinal at the girls’ state soccer tournament Friday night at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.

The last three trips to the finals have ended the same way — 1-0 losses to West Des Moines Valley.

“We’ve never really pulled it off,” said Kennedy’s Jade Grimm. “Hopefully, this is the year we can get it done.”

The Cougars (19-0) will be favored to do so. They’ll face No. 11 Iowa City West (15-5), which upset Urbandale, 2-1, Friday.

Game time is 1 p.m. Saturday.

“(Before the game), I’ll tell them it’s still a green field, a round ball, same as always,” said Kennedy Coach Homer Screws. “Just play ball.”

Kennedy defeated West, 3-0, earlier this season. And the Cougars have controlled play in their first two games at state. They took 23 shots, compared to 13 by Ankeny (16-3).

The Cougars took the lead for good with 13 minutes left in the first half. Jenny Martin’s corner kick pinballed among a number of players, then Jenny Snook drilled it into the goal.

“It was pretty lucky,” Snook said. “I want to thank (Katherine) Lewis for missing the ball, so it landed on my foot.”

The clincher came with 19 minutes remaining. Grimm took a pretty feed from Lewis and scored from the left side of the box.

“It was a give-and-go,” Grimm said. “She passed it, and I went for the corner (of the goal).”

Despite the Cougars’ dominance, Screws still feels another level can be attained.

“We still need to work on our timing and our composure on the offensive one-third of the field,” he said. “Sometimes, we get a little rushed.”

Five Kennedy starters are seniors. Win or lose, they’ll play their final game Saturday.

“It’s our fourth year in a row (in the finals),” Snook said. “Hopefully, this time, we can finish it off.”
