MUSCATINE — For the sixth straight year, Cedar Rapids Xavier will play Saturday soccer at the girls’ state tournament.

The top-ranked Saints exploded for four goals in an 8 1/2-minute span early in the second half and defeated No. 4 Union, 4-2, in a Class 1A semifinal Friday afternoon at the Muscatine soccer complex.

“Four goals, that surprised even us,” said Colleen Bouchard, who scored the first one. “We came out with a lot more intensity in the second half. We played more as a team thanas  individuals.”

The Saints (17-4) reached the championship game for the sixth straight year. They hope to add to the collection of titles they won in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Xavier tangles with No. 3 Dallas Center-Grimes (14-5) for the crown at 11 a.m. DC-G upended No. 2 Sioux City Heelan, 4-1.

Union retired at 21-1, but the Knights proved they were legitimate. They led 1-0 at halftime — freshman Darian Powell recorded her 70th goal of the season — before Xavier’s explosion.

The Saints got even when Bouchard kicked off the post, gathered the ricochet, then placed it in the net.

“It just bounced back toward me, I took my time and I was able to get a good shot,” she said.

Kathryn Mettenberg’s goal, a header off a corner kick from Megan Konchar, gave Xavier a 2-1 lead with 30:38 left. The Saints weren’t done. Not even close.

Annie Dale scored off an assist from Bouchard, then Lauren Koncher scored from near the right corner to make it 4-1 at the 26:29 mark.

“We really relaxed after we got the first goal,” Dale said. “We were very upset at halftime, but we didn’t let it get us too down. We knew we could do it.”

Unofficially, Xavier took 27 shots, compared to 19 for Union.

The Knights had outscored their first 21 opponents by a 146-6 margin. Cathy Reiter scored Union’s final goal, with 20:41 left.
